How to Fix Gaps in Teeth Without Braces

If you're worried about not being able to find an option other than braces for your to help fix your smile, fear not. In this post, our Village Orthodontics orthodontists explain the other options available to you.

A misalignment in your jawbone can cause extra space between your teeth, which can lead to other oral health issues. If braces are not an option for you for whatever reason, consider the following procedures.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is surgically anchored to your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or teeth in place. The use of implants has the advantage of not being supported by neighbouring teeth. This allows for a more permanent and stable replacement for missing teeth. After the titanium root is implanted into your bone, the tissue and bone will fuse and heal around the implant.

Dentures

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and gums. They normally come in two varieties: full and partial dentures.

After all of your teeth have been extracted, complete dentures are placed in your mouth. A clasp or other retaining device secures a partial denture to your natural teeth. Partial dentures can usually be removed from the mouth.

Dental Veneers

If your teeth are naturally spaced widely, dental veneers may be an option to close the gaps. Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells of tooth-coloured materials that are used to improve the appearance of teeth by covering the front surface. These shells are bonded to the front of your teeth and can change the colour, shape, size, and length of your teeth.

Dental Crowns

A crown can be used to restore the shape, appearance, and function of a tooth that has been damaged.

Following a root canal, a crown is typically used to strengthen your tooth structure. Crowns can also be used to support large fillings, secure a bridge, or conceal discoloured or deformed teeth. They can also be used to cover dental implants.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding, like veneers, can be used to close gaps between your teeth. Tooth bonding is a procedure in which your orthodontist uses a tooth-coloured composite resin to repair damage to one or more of your teeth. It is typically a more cost-effective option because it is less expensive than other cosmetic dental procedures such as crowns and veneers.

Invisalign

Invisalign employs a series of aligners that are almost imperceptible to others. They are low profile when worn and easily removed, so you don't have to be afraid to smile while undergoing treatment. Invisalign is a 3D computer imaging technology that should be effective in straightening your smile.

Patients will be given a series of aligners, which could be as few as 12 or as many as 48. Each aligner must be worn for approximately two weeks. Throughout treatment, your teeth will gradually begin to move into the correct positions. Except when eating, brushing, or flossing, you will need to wear the aligners full-time.
