Orthodontics For Adults: Treatment & Benefits

More and more adults are choosing to undergo orthodontic treatment for both aesthetic reasons, and to improve their oral health. And with all the low profile treatment options available, they're discovering that they can do it on their own terms!

Reasons to Straighten Your Teeth

When teeth are not properly positioned, they cause a variety of oral health problems. Speech may be affected, the jaw may not work properly, and it can also lead to uneven tooth wear.

Misaligned teeth can also affect oral hygiene. When teeth are properly aligned, it's fairly easy to clean them properly with normal brushing and flossing. But when there is a misalignment and the teeth overlap, bacteria and food debris can remain on the teeth in places the toothbrush and floss can't reach. This can result in gum disease and tooth decay.

Some adults also suffer from insecurities related to the misalignment of their teeth. They may avoid smiling for pictures, speaking confidently, or even eating in public.

For all of these reasons, it can be highly beneficial for adults to undergo orthodontic treatment.

Low Profile Orthodontic Options for Adults

Adults may not seek orthodontic treatment because they are concerned about the aesthetics of braces. Fortunately though, dental technology has come a long way, and there are many discreet and convenient treatment options for adult patients to choose from.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign is a series of clear, custom made plastic aligners that are almost indiscernible when worn over the teeth. Over the course of treatment, they move the teeth into the desired positions with a gentle, constant pressure.

Invisalign aligners are also removable, allowing patients to eat, drink, brush and floss as they normally would.

The combined convenience and transparency of Invisalign aligners makes them an attractive orthodontic treatment option for adults patients.

Braces

We offer many different types of braces for the adult patient, including:

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are placed on the "back" of the teeth (the side facing into the mouth), making them difficult to see unless the patient opens up wide.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces have brackets made of a tooth coloured ceramic material designed to blend right in with a patient's teeth. While the ceramic brackets are actually larger than standard metal brackets, they are far less noticeable when worn.

Self Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces have smaller brackets and don't require elastic or metal ties, making them yet another low profile option ideal for adult patients concerned about aesthetics.
